Interesting Facts About Dyfed

1. The County of Dyfed was established in 1974 but was shortlived. Its geographical area was roughly based on the area previously occupied by the ancient Principality of Deheubarth but excluding the Gower. Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire, and Pembrokeshire were merged to create Dyfed. The first elections to Dyfed County Council were in April 1973.

2. In April 1996 Dyfed County Council was broken up and the resultant three councils were based on the old counties, which were restored for administrative purposes: Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. Cardiganshire renamed itself Ceredigion, the old Welsh name for the district.

3. The name Dyfed was retained for purely ceremonial purposes such as the Lord Lieutenancy.

4. The administrative headquarters of Dyfed was Carmarthen whilst the largest towns in Dyfed were Llanelli, Haverfordwest, Milford Haven and Aberystwyth.
